[Ueno] Special exhibit "Showa 100": The History of Conservation and Restoration at the Museum in the Showa Era opens June 30 in the 19th-Century Hall, Main Building 1F

Overview

From June 30, 2026 to January 11, 2027, the special exhibit "Showa 100": The History of Conservation and Restoration at the Museum in the Showa Era — Van Gogh's Roses and Renoir's Woman with a Hat as Examples will be held in the 19th-Century Hall on the 1st floor of the Main Building in Ueno.

The exhibit marks the milestone of the 100th year since the Showa era began. It centers on two works from the museum's collection, Vincent van Gogh's Roses and Pierre-Auguste Renoir's Woman with a Hat, and traces the conservation and restoration work the museum carried out over the course of the Showa era.

Over time, Western paintings change as their paint deteriorates and their surfaces become damaged. Conservation and restoration work is essential to identify these changes, give the works the treatment they need and pass them on to future generations. As concrete examples, the exhibit features two of the museum's signature works, Van Gogh's Roses and Renoir's Woman with a Hat. Both were painted by artists central to any discussion of modern Western painting, and both have long been popular with visitors. The exhibit shows the conservation and restoration processes these works went through during the Showa era, giving visitors a way to engage with the paintings from a different angle than simply viewing them.

The venue, the 19th-Century Hall on the 1st floor of the Main Building, is a permanent gallery devoted mainly to 19th-century Western painting, and the special exhibit is presented within this space. A highlight of the exhibit is the chance to view works by Van Gogh and Renoir in person while learning the history of the specialized conservation and restoration work behind them.

The exhibit runs for more than six months, from June 30, 2026 to January 11, 2027. If you're planning to see art in Ueno, consider adding it to your visit.
