[Ueno] Special Exhibition "Utagawa Hiroshige: The Best Angles of Edo" Opens September 29 at the Tokyo National Museum
Overview
The Tokyo National Museum is holding the special exhibition "Commemorating the Donation of the Susumu Uchiyama Collection: Utagawa Hiroshige, The Best Angles of Edo." The exhibition marks the donation of the Susumu Uchiyama Collection and presents works by Utagawa Hiroshige, one of the leading ukiyo-e artists of the Edo period.
Hiroshige is known for depicting the landscapes and famous sights of Edo from his own distinctive perspective. As the phrase "The Best Angles of Edo" in the title suggests, the exhibition appears to focus on the highlights of the Edo scenery that Hiroshige captured. It was organized to commemorate the donation of the Susumu Uchiyama Collection to the Tokyo National Museum, and works selected from the collection are expected to be on display.
The venue, the Tokyo National Museum, is located in Ueno Park and is one of Japan's leading museums. It holds and exhibits cultural properties across a wide range of fields, including Japanese and Asian art and archaeological artifacts, and draws large crowds for each special exhibition. The Ueno area is known for its concentration of cultural facilities such as museums, art galleries and a zoo, so this special exhibition is also a good opportunity to visit other cultural facilities nearby.
The exhibition runs for about three months, from September 29 to December 20, 2026. Because it continues from autumn into winter, it is easy to fit into your plans when visiting Ueno Park, including during the autumn foliage season. Through Hiroshige's works, it promises to be a valuable opportunity to see the landscapes that people of the Edo period saw and to experience the charm of Edo at that time.
