[Ueno] Special Exhibition "Collection Exhibition (Tentative Title)" Opens November 3 at the Shitamachi Museum

The special exhibition "Collection Exhibition (Tentative Title)" will be held at the Shitamachi Museum in Ueno from November 3, 2026 to February 28, 2027.

Overview

This exhibition focuses on paper materials from the Shitamachi Museum's collection that have rarely been shown to the public, such as nishiki-e and picture postcards. Nishiki-e are multicolored woodblock prints that circulated widely among ordinary people from the Edo period through the Meiji era, popular as a vivid medium for conveying the news, trends, customs and famous sights of the day. Picture postcards, too, spread alongside advances in photography and printing, becoming part of everyday life as an easy way to share scenes from travels and views of the city.

Although such paper materials are valuable records that convey the atmosphere of their times and how people lived, the fragile nature of paper means that, out of concern for their preservation, they are seldom placed on permanent display, and opportunities to see them have been limited. Through these items from the collection, the exhibition introduces the visual culture once enjoyed by ordinary people. It promises to be a chance to see materials that are rarely on view.

The Shitamachi Museum is known as a facility that conveys the history and culture of the Ueno and shitamachi (old downtown) area, and it holds a large collection of items related to local life. This special exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore part of that collection.
