[Ueno] Mural "Asakusa Big Parade" Exhibition at the Shitamachi Museum from July 7!
Overview
This special exhibition shows the mural "Asakusa Big Parade" by Koji Kata. The mural once decorated the inside of a coffee shop in Nishi-Asakusa 3-chome. The exhibition also presents materials on the Asakusa stars painted in the mural. Together with the mural, these materials look back at the entertainers and celebrities who brought color to Asakusa in its heyday.
The exhibition also features "Golden Bat," Kata's best-known work, and uses it to explain the culture of street kamishibai (picture-card storytelling). In the Showa era, kamishibai was a popular form of entertainment for children on street corners, and "Golden Bat" is known as one of its most famous works. The exhibition traces the mural artist's career alongside the culture of kamishibai.
Please note that the museum will be closed from June 29 to July 6 for fumigation and exhibition changeover. This closure falls just before the exhibition opens, so please check the exhibition dates before you visit.
