[Ueno] Special Exhibition "Glass Dry Plate Exhibition: The Joy of Taking Photographs" Opens March 3 at the Shitamachi Museum
Overview
The special exhibition "Glass Dry Plate Exhibition: The Joy of Taking Photographs" opens at the Shitamachi Museum in Ueno on March 3, 2026.
The exhibition looks at how the invention of the glass dry plate opened photography up to the general public. Photography once required specialized skills and equipment, and the glass dry plate is known as the technology that put it within reach of many more people. Visitors can explore its historical significance through actual materials.
On display is a selection of photographs taken by amateur photographers of the era, drawn from the glass plates in the Shitamachi Museum's collection. Subjects vary widely, from snapshots of street scenes to records of trips and everyday family moments. Unlike work by professional photographers, these images convey the atmosphere of a time when photography was starting to take root in people's lives as a hobby.
The exhibition's theme is "the first step toward the popularization of photography." Through the museum's collection, it traces how the glass dry plate, a technological innovation, turned photography from something special into something familiar to ordinary people. What did ordinary people look at, and what did they try to record, once they had a camera in hand? The exhibition promises a rare chance to see the world through the eyes of the amateur photographers of the time.
