[Ueno] Special Display "Collection in Focus" Opens March 28 at the National Museum of Western Art
Overview
The National Museum of Western Art will hold "Collection in Focus," a special display within its permanent collection galleries. It will be on the 2nd floor of the Main Building and the 1st floor of the New Wing, and presents a narrowed selection of works from the permanent collection.
Located in Ueno Park, the National Museum of Western Art is one of Japan's leading museums dedicated to Western art. Its collection covers a wide range of periods and media, including paintings, sculptures and prints from the late Middle Ages to the early 20th century. The museum draws on the depth of this collection to rotate its permanent exhibition, changing the themes and approaches over time. "Collection in Focus" is one of these special displays.
As the title suggests, the display looks again at works from the permanent collection from a specific perspective and brings together their highlights. The display is spread across two floors, the 2nd floor of the Main Building and the 1st floor of the New Wing, so visitors can see it as they move through the permanent collection galleries, a layout typical of the museum.
The display is scheduled to run from March 28, 2026 to mid-January 2027, a long run of about 10 months. The Ueno Park area is also home to many other cultural and tourist attractions, including the Tokyo National Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and Ueno Zoo, so you can also explore the neighborhood when you visit the National Museum of Western Art.
