[Ueno] Lecture "Picture Books Using Monochrome Expression" on November 15, hosted by the International Library of Children's Literature

Overview

The International Library of Children's Literature will hold a lecture titled "Picture Books Using Monochrome Expression" on November 15, 2026.

The lecture focuses on monochrome, a picture book technique that uses no color, only black and white (or shades of a single color). Without color, monochrome illustration relies on line, shading and the use of white space to convey a story's atmosphere and its characters' emotions. It is considered an important area of picture book making. The lecture will take an expert look at picture books that use monochrome expression.

The event is mainly for junior high school students and older. Rather than being aimed at children, it is designed for a wide audience, from middle and high school students to adults, with an interest in picture book art, fine art, publishing or education. Many people think of picture books as something for children, but a lecture that explores the techniques behind them offers plenty to learn for anyone involved in creating books or wanting to study picture books.

Capacity is 100, with advance registration on a first-come, first-served basis. At the time of writing, registration has not opened, so anyone wishing to attend will need to wait for the announcement. Because registration closes once the limit is reached, those interested should keep an eye out for updates.

The International Library of Children's Literature is known for regularly organizing events about children's books and picture books, and this lecture is part of that work. By focusing on monochrome, a deliberately limited palette, instead of color, the lecture promises to broaden the ways we read and look at picture books.
