[Ueno] "Pictures within Pictures: Adventures in Painting about Painting, from the Renaissance to the Present and Beyond" Opens September 18 at the National Museum of Western Art
Overview
The National Museum of Western Art in Ueno has announced the exhibition "Pictures within Pictures: Adventures in Painting about Painting, from the Renaissance to the Present and Beyond." It runs from Saturday, September 18, 2027 to Sunday, January 16, 2028.
The exhibition is a collaboration between the National Museum of Western Art and the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. Two museums, one in Tokyo and one in Vienna, have joined forces to present it: the National Museum of Western Art in Ueno and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria.
The title "Pictures within Pictures" refers to paintings depicted inside other paintings. The subtitle, "Adventures in Painting about Painting," suggests that the exhibition focuses on paintings that appear within paintings. The phrase "from the Renaissance to the Present and Beyond" also indicates that it spans the Renaissance to the present day, while looking to what comes next.
The exhibition runs for about four months, from mid-September 2027 to mid-January of the following year. From autumn into winter, it could make a good stop when you visit Ueno Park. Details such as admission fees and exhibits have yet to be announced, so stay tuned for updates.
