Matisse: The Poetics of Black and White — Focusing on the Print Collection of the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation
Oct 23, 2026 · Ueno
[Ueno] Matisse: The Poetics of Black and White opens March 20 at The National Museum of Western Art!
The National Museum of Western Art in Ueno will host the special exhibition "Matisse: The Poetics of Black and White — Focusing on the Print Collection of the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation." It runs from March 20 to July 19, 2027.
The exhibition is built around the print collection held by the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation. As the title suggests, its theme is "black and white," focusing on what Matisse expressed through these two colors.
As the word "poetics" in the title implies, the exhibition goes beyond simply displaying works, turning its attention to the very nature of expression that arises from the limited elements of black and white. By narrowing its scope to prints and centering on a single foundation's collection, it promises an exhibition where visitors can engage with the works in line with its theme.
The venue, The National Museum of Western Art, is one of the Ueno area's signature museums. Ueno is home to a concentration of art museums and other museums, and many people come specifically to tour exhibitions. If you're visiting Ueno for this exhibition, we recommend making a full day of it and enjoying the surrounding cultural facilities as well.
The exhibition runs for about four months, from late March to mid-July. Its long run from spring into early summer makes it easy to plan a visit at your own pace. You could even visit once and then return in another season.
Admission fees and detailed access information have not been confirmed at this time. Please check the museum's latest information before visiting.
Themed around Matisse's "black and white," this is one of the special exhibitions to watch in Ueno next year. Let's look forward to its opening on March 20, 2027.
