[Ueno] Dahlia Exhibition "Dahlia Aya-nasu Aki no Sono" at Ueno Toshogu Peony Garden! Over 200 Plants of 120 Varieties Color the Autumn Garden

Overview

Ueno Toshogu Peony Garden is holding "Dahlia Aya-nasu Aki no Sono" (Autumn Garden Woven with Dahlias), a special festival featuring over 200 dahlia plants of 120 varieties, from Saturday, September 19 to Tuesday, November 3 (public holiday), 2026. A wide variety of dahlias color the autumn garden in the Ueno Park area. The event draws many visitors every year, with about 20,000 people visiting last year.

Early-blooming dahlias can be enjoyed at the start of the event, and the dahlias in the garden are expected to reach their peak around mid-October, when the heat eases. Blooming updates are posted daily on the official Instagram.

Highlights

  • Akita Prefecture's original "NAMAHAGE Dahlia" series: About 10 varieties are on display from this series, which was created in 2012 and now includes more than 40 varieties.
  • Dahlias in a variety of forms: These include "Uwakigokoro," whose deep red, pink and white blooms mix unpredictably; "Kokucho," a popular variety in a blackish deep red; and "Mary Evelyn," with small petals layered inside neatly arranged petals. Varieties shown at the garden for the first time include "Daisuisho" (giant, formal decorative), "Kisei" (medium-large, semi-cactus) and "Moco Purple" (small, anemone-flowered). *Some may not be visible depending on growing conditions.
  • Scenery unique to the Peony Garden: Enjoy dahlias with displays featuring Japanese umbrellas and views of the Former Kan'eiji Five-Story Pagoda.
  • Photo spots: Seasonal decorative displays, container arrangements and bonsai are set up throughout the garden.
  • Autumn flowers: Besides dahlias, great burnet, fujibakama (thoroughwort), cosmos and other flowers bloom in succession.
