The special exhibition "The Lineage of Modern Japanese Art" opened at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum on August 15, 2026. It runs until October 12.

The exhibition traces how Japanese art changed from the Meiji era to the early Showa era. Through works in a wide range of genres, including Western-style painting, Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and sculpture, it shows how the adoption of Western art and the continuation of traditional techniques shaped each other. Many rare works have been gathered from museums in Japan and abroad and from private collections, and some pieces can only be seen at this exhibition.

Gallery talks by curators and audio guide rentals are planned during the exhibition, so it is a good choice for visitors who want to take their time. Ueno Park is also home to several other art museums and museums, so visiting a few of them in one trip is another way to enjoy the area.
