Former Tokyo Music School Sogakudo Announces September Building Open Days
The Former Tokyo Music School Sogakudo, located in a corner of Ueno Park next to Tokyo University of the Arts, has announced its building open days for September 2026. Built in the Meiji era, the Sogakudo is a wooden concert hall known as a building that tells the history of modern music education in Japan. It is a valuable piece of architecture that preserves its original design and structure, and one of the spots worth visiting when you come to Ueno.
Open days are scheduled throughout the month, giving visitors a chance to see the building's interior and fittings that retain the atmosphere of the era. Note, however, that because the building dates from the Meiji era, it is not barrier-free. Its structure, including steps and the presence or absence of ramps, differs from modern facilities, so it's a good idea to check in advance against your own means of getting around and physical condition before visiting.
Photography inside the hall is also not permitted while on-stage rehearsals or concerts are taking place. The Sogakudo is still in active use as a concert hall, so even on open days you cannot always photograph freely throughout the entire hall. This is a circumstance unique to a historic building that balances musical performances with public access.
Standing in a Meiji-era wooden hall where musicians of the time studied and performed is an experience only Ueno can offer. Check the open-day schedule and be sure to pay a visit.
