[Ueno] Taito City 80th Anniversary Project: The History of Taito City Exhibition (Tentative Title) Opens March 2, 2027 at the Shitamachi Museum
Overview
"The History of Taito City Exhibition (Tentative Title)" will be held at the Shitamachi Museum to mark the 80th anniversary of Taito City, which includes the Ueno and Asakusa areas.
Taito City was created by the merger of Shitaya Ward and Asakusa Ward, which were once separate municipalities. The exhibition first introduces these two wards as they were before the merger, focusing on the history of each and the distinctive character of each area. It will look back at the local character and features of both wards, which developed against the backdrop of shitamachi (old downtown) culture dating back to the Edo period.
The exhibition then traces the 80 years since the two wards merged to form Taito City. It introduces events from the city's history, how its streets and neighborhoods changed over time, and what Taito City looks like today, giving visitors an overview of how the area has changed over many years.
Taito City, home to Ueno and Asakusa, is known for areas that still keep the atmosphere of old downtown Tokyo, and this look back at its origins and history should be well worth a visit for anyone interested in local history. A key feature of the exhibition is that a single show traces the story from the days of Shitaya Ward and Asakusa Ward to the present, offering a fresh chance to learn how Taito City came to be.
The venue, the Shitamachi Museum, presents the history and culture of Tokyo's shitamachi area and has previously held special exhibitions on local themes. This exhibition is part of a commemorative project marking Taito City's 80th anniversary.
