[Ueno] The 2nd Japanese Food Culture Heritage Society "Imoni-kai" (Taro Stew Gathering)! From October 23 at the Benten-mon Gate Plaza in Ueno Onshi Park

Overview

For three days, from Friday, October 23 to Sunday, October 25, 2026, the Japanese Food Culture Heritage Society will hold an "Imoni-kai" (taro stew gathering) at the Benten-mon Gate Plaza in Ueno Onshi Park. This is the second edition of the event.

As its name suggests, the organizer, the Japanese Food Culture Heritage Society, is dedicated to preserving Japan's food culture and passing it on to the next generation. Following last year's event, this second edition will show whether the gathering becomes an established autumn fixture in Ueno.

"Imoni" is a hot-pot dish starring taro, an autumn favorite enjoyed especially in the Tohoku region. Seasonings and ingredients vary by region and household, making it a dish known for strongly reflecting local food culture. Gathering outdoors around a large pot during the harvest season, known as an "imoni-kai," has also long been a beloved autumn tradition in these areas. It is interesting that a society devoted to passing on Japanese food culture has chosen imoni as its theme.

The venue, the Benten-mon Gate Plaza, is located in the part of Ueno Onshi Park near Shinobazu Pond. The Benten-mon Gate is one of the gates leading to Bentendo Hall, which sits on Shinobazu Pond, and the surrounding area is busy with strollers and tourists. Whether walking along the pond or admiring the changing colors of the park's trees, it is a great spot to enjoy autumn in the park.

The event runs from Friday to Sunday, including the weekend. With museums, art galleries, a zoo and other attractions scattered around the Ueno area, why not fit the imoni-kai into a day spent in the park? Take a moment to experience Japanese food culture in Ueno this autumn.

Please note that prices and other details have not been announced at this time. If you plan to attend, it is a good idea to check the latest information beforehand.
