September 21: Nine Metropolitan Gardens Temporarily Closed
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will temporarily close nine metropolitan gardens, including Former Iwasaki-tei Gardens, on September 21, 2026. Located at 1-3-45 Ikenohata, Taito-ku, Tokyo, Former Iwasaki-tei Gardens is a popular residential garden close to Shinobazu Pond in Ueno. Visitors can usually tour the grounds along with historic buildings such as the Western-style house and the Japanese-style house, and the gardens serve as a place of relaxation for tourists visiting Ueno and local residents alike. As the gardens will not be open on this day only, anyone planning a visit should take note.
Notably, the closure covers not only Former Iwasaki-tei Gardens but all nine metropolitan gardens, so it is expected to affect gardens across Tokyo, not just in the Ueno area. Because this closure is separate from the regular closing days, it is advisable to check before visiting even on days of the week when the gardens are normally open. Based on the information available at this time, details such as the reason for the closure, the other gardens affected, and whether any alternative arrangements will be offered on the day have not been made clear.
Former Iwasaki-tei Gardens originated as the residence built by the Iwasaki family of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu. Known for its distinctive landscape in which Western architecture and a Japanese garden coexist, it is often included in walking routes around Ueno Park. A temporary closure like this directly affects visit plans, making it essential information especially for those traveling from afar or planning to sightsee in the Ueno area on a limited schedule.
If you are considering a visit, it is recommended that you check the latest opening status on the official website in advance.
