New Year Prayer Talismans Available by Mail

Shinobazunoike Bentendo has published information about receiving New Year prayer talismans (kitō-fuda) by mail. Each New Year, many worshippers visit Shinobazunoike Bentendo in Ueno Onshi Park (Ueno Park) to pray for good fortune. However, many people can't make the trip because of the crowds, a lack of time or other reasons. The mail service lets these worshippers receive a prayer talisman without leaving home.

Shinobazunoike Bentendo is a hall of Kaneiji Temple on Nakanoshima, the island in Shinobazu Pond. This historic hall has been a place of worship for people across the Yanaka and Ueno area since the Edo period. Although it is in central Tokyo, the hall is surrounded by water. Both worshippers and people out for a stroll enjoy the setting, and it is one of the Ueno area's landmark spots, busy in every season. The hall is known to draw especially large crowds over the New Year holidays every year. For people who find it hard to visit, receiving a talisman by mail is a practical option.

Through the mail service, people who live far away or can't come to Ueno at New Year because of their health or work can still receive a New Year prayer talisman at home. Worshippers can still visit the hall to receive a talisman in person, and the mail option gives everyone a way to welcome the New Year that suits their own situation.

See the official website for details on how to apply and any conditions.
